Senator David Umahi, Minister of Works and Housing, has commended the significant progress on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, applauding contractor Hitech for their professionalism and commitment in overcoming challenges such as heavy rains and ocean surges. During an inspection tour on Monday, Umahi expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, emphasizing Hitech’s deployment of sophisticated equipment and dedication to national development over profit.
Umahi also addressed critics on social media, describing their claims as misinformed and malicious. He refuted allegations of inadequate drainage systems, clarifying that the project includes 1,500 kilometers of underground drainage and urging the public to disregard false reports.
Regarding the Third Mainland Bridge rehabilitation, the minister clarified that no final cost has been approved, contrary to preliminary figures circulating in the media. He explained that estimates from Julius Berger were presented to the Federal Executive Council as part of a broader proposal to engage multiple global contractors for detailed investigations and designs. Umahi highlighted structural concerns, including chlorination and rusting of piles due to saltwater exposure and illegal sand mining, which have compromised the bridge’s foundations.
The ministry remains focused on ensuring transparent, cost-effective solutions for infrastructure renewal, prioritizing safety and durability.
