The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has explained why it cleared an Air Peace co-pilot to return to duty despite a Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) report suggesting possible use of drugs and alcohol after a runway excursion incident.

The incident occurred on June 13, 2025, when an Air Peace Boeing 737 veered off the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport after landing beyond the designated touchdown zone. Preliminary findings by the NSIB included references to alleged substance use by the flight crew.

However, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, said the co-pilot was exonerated following the regulator’s independent investigation. He explained that tests and evidence available to the NCAA did not support claims of drug or alcohol consumption, adding that it would have been unjust to keep the officer suspended without proof.

Achimugu further disclosed that the co-pilot had advised the captain to abort the landing and attempt a go-around, but the recommendation was not followed. He maintained that the NCAA’s decision was guided strictly by facts and established aviation safety standards.

Air Peace also denied receiving any official communication confirming that its crew tested positive for substance use. The airline reaffirmed its strict zero-tolerance policy on alcohol and drugs, stressing that its pilots undergo regular medical and fitness checks.

The NCAA said it would continue monitoring the airline’s operations while awaiting the NSIB’s final report on the Port Harcourt incident.
