The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and its Sierra Leone counterpart, the Sierra Leone Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen aviation safety collaboration across West Africa.
The agreement focuses on joint accident investigations, data sharing, and capacity building between both countries, with the aim of improving safety standards and investigative efficiency in the region. Under the partnership, both agencies will exchange technical expertise, participate in joint training programmes, and support each other during investigations. The arrangement also allows for the sharing of safety data, access to investigative equipment, and collaboration in flight recorder analysis.
Director-General of NSIB, Alex Badeh Jr., described the agreement as a strategic step toward strengthening investigative capacity and enhancing aviation safety outcomes across the sub-region. Sierra Leone’s Commissioner, Olubunmi Wellington also described the partnership as a milestone that will provide access to advanced training and improved investigative methods.
The agreement aligns with international aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization and reinforces ongoing cooperation among West African countries under regional frameworks. The move highlights growing efforts within the region to enhance aviation safety through collaboration, shared expertise, and strengthened institutional capacity.
