The United Kingdom, United States, and China have emerged as the top players in the global aviation recovery, with air travel in 2024 reaching pre-pandemic levels, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

IATA’s 68th World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) report revealed that 4.7 billion passengers flew globally last year up by 27.3% from 2023.

China recorded the largest domestic traffic with 617.3 million passengers, followed by the United States with 597.5 million. The United Kingdom led in international travel, with London Heathrow named the busiest international airport.

“The surge reflects a strong and sustained demand for global connectivity,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General.

Ryanair topped the list with 183.7 million passengers in 2024, while Turkish Airlines served the most countries, flying to 127 destinations. IATA noted that passenger traffic has not only recovered but in many cases surpassed pre-COVID levels, driven by consumer demand and increased flight capacity.

With travel demand high and airlines adjusting to meet expectations, IATA emphasized that the aviation industry is entering a new phase of growth that will depend heavily on digital innovation, sustainability, and global cooperation.
