Stakeholders including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have outlined a collaborative strategy to make Lagos State’s transport system safer, greener and more sustainable.

The call came during a transportation summit organised by the NLC Lagos State Council in partnership with labour unions from the transport and logistics sector. Participants emphasised the need for practical, people-centred solutions to longstanding transport challenges such as poor road conditions, traffic congestion and high commuting costs that burden workers.

NLC Lagos Chairperson Agnes Sessi urged the Lagos State Government to invest more in road maintenance, rail expansion and improved traffic management, calling on authorities to prioritise affordability, security and reliable public transport. She stressed that better roads and traffic systems should ease daily commutes rather than hinder productivity.

Representatives of LASTMA and the FRSC also highlighted the human element in transport safety, noting that reckless driving and poor traffic discipline contribute to congestion and crashes across the state. The FRSC’s Lagos Command noted the high toll of road accidents and reiterated the importance of discipline among motorists and transport operators.

At the event, security officials emphasised the need for coordinated enforcement and community awareness to reduce road deaths and improve mobility for residents. The summit concluded with a consensus that inter-agency collaboration, infrastructure improvement and stakeholder engagement are essential to building a sustainable and efficient transport system in Lagos.
