The Abia State Government has converted its Free Green Shuttle mass transit programme into a fare-paying transport service, while introducing a 50 per cent subsidy to keep fares affordable for residents. The transition began following a decision by the State Executive Council.

The announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who explained that the change is aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability and operational efficiency of the transport initiative introduced by the administration of Alex Otti.

Under the new system, commuters are required to use an electronic ticketing system through the Abia Connect Card, which allows passengers to access the buses through a digital payment process. Obtaining the card also requires registration under the Abia State Social Insurance Number (ABSSIN) scheme.

Government agencies have begun joint sensitisation and enforcement campaigns across major bus shelters in Umuahia and Aba to guide commuters on how to use the new system. Officials and enumerators have also been deployed to assist residents with card registration and payment processes at bus stops.
