The Federal Government has handed over five electric buses to transport operators in Kano State, targeting a reduction of at least 40 per cent in transport fares as part of efforts to promote affordable and environmentally friendly public transportation.
The buses were provided through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) and handed over to two operators, Camel Mobility and Kano Metropolitan Transport Company. Each vehicle has a seating capacity of 20 passengers. Speaking at the handover ceremony in Kano, Ahmed Katuka, Manager of Assets at Pi-CNG & EV, said the deployment was expected to reduce commuter fares by at least 40 per cent compared with prevailing conventional transport fares.
Katuka explained that the new electric buses would complement the existing fleet of 14-seater and high-capacity buses already deployed to the state under the initiative. He added that the intervention was designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve passenger safety and comfort, and encourage private-sector participation in cleaner mobility solutions.
The Chief Operating Officer of Camel Mobility, Ahmed Garba-Ahmed, welcomed the development and pledged that the company would put the buses into operation to ease transportation for residents. He, however, urged the Kano State Government to provide designated bus stops, dedicated transport corridors, adequate security and a conducive operating environment to support efficient operations.
