Nigeria’s aviation industry is facing growing instability following a sharp rise in aviation fuel prices, driven by the ongoing Middle East crisis. Jet A1 fuel, a critical component of airline operations, has surged to about ₦1,800 per litre across major airports in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano.
This represents a significant increase from earlier prices, intensifying pressure on airline operators. Industry experts attribute the spike to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted global oil supply and driven up fuel costs internationally.
Airlines are reportedly struggling to cope, as fuel accounts for a large share often around one-third of total operational expenses. Many operators have continued to absorb the increased costs without immediately passing them on to passengers, resulting in heavy financial strain.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) warned that the situation is unsustainable, noting that airlines are currently operating at a loss. According to spokesperson Obiora Okonkwo, the rapid increase estimated at about 80 percent within a short period has left operators financially strained.
