Lagos to Introduce State Driver’s Licence Amid Transport Reforms

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-owned driver’s licence as part of ongoing transportation reforms aimed at improving road safety, traffic management, and efficiency in licence processing.Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this during the 2025 ministerial briefing held in Ikeja.
According to him, the proposed initiative is being developed in partnership with the Federal Government and will provide motorists with the option of obtaining either the federal driver’s licence or the Lagos State driver’s licence.Osiyemi explained that the move is intended to enhance traffic sanity, strengthen road safety measures, and reduce delays associated with licence processing across the state.
He revealed that within the review period, more than 56,000 driver’s licences and over 1,100 international driving permits had already been processed by the state authorities.The commissioner also highlighted progress in Lagos’ rail transportation projects, confirming that the second phase of the Blue Line Rail project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko is expected to commence full commercial operations in the first quarter of 2027.
