The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has directed its members to stop depot operations by 6:00 p.m. daily as part of measures to address rising insecurity along highways.

The union also barred petroleum tanker drivers from entering depots after 5:00 p.m., citing increasing cases of armed robbery and truck hijacking targeting drivers and their vehicles.

The directive followed a meeting held at Ibeto, after which the Lagos Union Zonal leadership instructed members to comply with the revised operating hours.

Under the new arrangement, tanker drivers are expected to conclude depot-related activities by 6:00 p.m., while entry into depots will be restricted from 5:00 p.m.

The union said the measures were necessary to protect drivers, trucks and petroleum products from security threats, particularly during late hours when criminal activities pose greater risks to transportation operations.

The development is expected to affect daily loading and distribution schedules of petroleum products, especially for depot operators and transporters operating within Lagos and neighbouring areas.

Depot owners, transporters and other stakeholders have been urged to comply with the directive.
