IATA and ICAO Strengthen Cooperation on Sustainable Aviation Fuel Transparency

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have pledged to deepen collaboration on advancing the transparency and integrity of tracking mechanisms for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). The announcement was made during ICAO’s Aviation Climate Week, with the aim of accelerating both the development and uptake of SAF.

Through closer alignment between industry and states, underpinned by robust data systems and high-quality information, the partnership will enable credible and transparent monitoring of cleaner aviation energy sources. This effort supports the sector’s path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, consistent with the long-term goals and commitments of both organizations.

Under the agreement, IATA and ICAO will examine how SAF registries, and the data they generate—can reinforce the ICAO Long-Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) Monitoring and Reporting (LMR) framework, as well as inform fuel accounting systems for international aviation.

ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar emphasized, “Credible tracking is necessary to know the emissions reductions delivered by SAF. The data collected by the CADO SAF Registry, among others, has the potential to meet this need.”

IATA Director General Willie Walsh added, “By working with ICAO to strengthen how progress on SAF use is measured and reported, we can accelerate deployment, build trust across stakeholders, and put aviation on track for net zero by 2050. This will set a great example for individual states to work with industry to make the most of the SAF data that is being accumulated.”
