All passengers survived a recent boat mishap in Niger State due to mandatory life-jacket usage under the Federal Government’s waterways safety initiative. The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) had distributed 3,700 life jackets to operators across the state’s 17 riverine communities prior to the incident.
Transportation Commissioner Hadiza Idris Kuta confirmed the life jackets enabled passengers to stay afloat until rescue. “Without these, we’d be counting bodies today,” stated Kuta through Permanent Secretary Lucky Barau, calling the intervention “a turning point for water safety.”
The safety drive, part of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy’s national program, also prohibits night travel and boat overcrowding. Niger State is phasing out wooden boats for fiber vessels, with eight already deployed and water ambulances planned.
The state has further recruited “water marshals” to enforce a strict “no jacket, no boarding” policy at all jetties. Similar safety campaigns with life-jacket distributions are now active in Bayelsa, Anambra, and Ogun States to reduce nationwide boat fatalities.
