The Lagos State Government has announced that the state will host Africa’s first-ever electric powerboat race, scheduled for October 4 and 5, 2025.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the development after attending a recent edition of the E1 World Championship in Monaco, noting that Lagos will join cities such as Venice, Monaco, and Jeddah as hosts of the global event.

The championship, organised by the UIM E1 Series, will feature electric-powered RaceBird boats capable of gliding at speeds of up to 93 km/h. Organisers said the event aims to combine sporting excitement with advocacy for clean energy and sustainable marine transportation.

According to the Lagos State Government, the race is expected to attract more than 250 international participants and generate millions of dollars in tourism and investment opportunities. It also aligns with the state’s Omi Eko Project, a €410 million initiative to modernise inland water transport through electric ferries and smart terminals.

Sanwo-Olu described the event as a milestone for Lagos, saying it would showcase the state’s culture, innovation, and commitment to sustainability on the global stage.
