The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Domínguez, has commended Nigeria for significant progress in maritime security and the development of its Blue Economy policy.

Domínguez, who spoke during a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, praised the country’s Deep Blue Project and inter-agency collaboration, which he said have helped achieve more than three years of zero piracy incidents in Nigerian waters.

He noted that Nigeria’s efforts have not only enhanced safety in its territorial waters but also provided leadership in strengthening security across the Gulf of Guinea, one of the world’s former piracy hotspots.

The IMO chief stressed the importance of sustaining these gains through continuous investment in modern equipment, robust training, and improved maritime infrastructure. He also welcomed Nigeria’s Blue Economy policy as a forward-looking framework for harnessing marine resources to drive economic growth, create jobs, and promote sustainability.

During the visit, the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, outlined reforms in maritime safety, seafarer welfare, and regulatory enforcement. The Maritime Academy of Nigeria in Oron also showcased upgrades to its training facilities.

Minister Oyetola expressed appreciation for the IMO’s recognition, assuring that Nigeria would build on its achievements, deepen stakeholder collaboration, and strengthen policies to ensure maritime security while expanding opportunities in the Blue Economy sector.
