Nigeria’s transport sector has consolidated into a unified political force with the launch of “Transporters for Tinubu 2027,” a coalition of major unions endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign. The support group emerges as both a political movement and reform advocate, highlighting the administration’s Compressed Natural Gas initiatives and infrastructure projects while demanding urgent solutions to systemic challenges.
During the inaugural event, National Coordinator Prince Dr. Segun Obayendo declared a transport sector emergency, revealing that road accidents claimed over 5,421 lives in 2024 while logistics inefficiencies cost the economy approximately ₦3.5 trillion annually.
“If we fix transport, we fix half of our economic challenges,” he asserted, framing the group’s dual mission of political support and sector transformation.
National Secretary Mrs. Chinwe Uwaegbute struck a more optimistic tone, detailing nationwide mobilization plans across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory while praising railway revitalization and road investments. “We have seen, felt, and believed,” she stated, capturing the group’s conviction in the administration’s transport agenda.
The coalition immediately secured endorsements from key transport unions. Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners President Alhaji Yusuf Lawal Othman committed their nationwide network to Tinubu’s re-election, specifically praising CNG vehicle integration.
Tricycle Owners Association leader Comrade Augustine pledged full cooperation, citing tricycle subsidies as evidence of the administration’s positive impact. Aviation Union representative Comrade Eselle Festus declared unprecedented sector energy under Tinubu, highlighting Nigeria’s unbroken air safety record since the government took office.
Nigeria Railway Workers Union’s Comrade Kazeem endorsed the continuity agenda, applauding the strategic appointment of Dr. Kayode Opeifa to lead railway modernization. Road transport stakeholder Mrs. Precious Ademoroti concluded with testimony of improved road infrastructure reducing vehicle accidents.
This united front of millions of transport workers positions the sector as a decisive factor in the 2027 elections, advocating for Tinubu’s second term to complete ongoing reforms and infrastructure projects across Nigeria’s transport landscape.
