Nigeria’s automotive industry has praised the Senate for advancing the Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill 2025, describing it as a landmark step toward modernising the nation’s transport system and reducing carbon emissions.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, scaled its second reading this week and seeks to create a national framework that will guide the adoption, production, and use of electric vehicles across the country. It also proposes incentives to boost local manufacturing and encourage investments in green mobility.
Key industry players, including the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, Alcman Nigeria, and KIA Motors Nigeria, commended the Senate’s move. NADDC Director-General Joseph Osanipin said the legislation signals Nigeria’s readiness to join the global shift toward cleaner transportation.
Innoson founder, Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, described the bill as timely, noting that it will support local assemblers planning to expand into EV production. Representatives from Alcman and KIA Motors also highlighted the bill’s potential to create jobs, deepen local content, and make environmentally friendly vehicles more affordable.
The proposed law includes provisions for EV charging stations at fuel outlets, tax incentives for investors, and mandatory partnerships between foreign automakers and Nigerian assemblers to boost local production.
