Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has declared the 2025 Nigeria Maritime Exhibition & Conference (NIMAREX) officially open, while also revealing a major boost in the country’s fisheries sector.

Speaking at the event, Oyetola announced that local fish production has increased by 27 percent, signaling significant progress in Nigeria’s drive toward self-sufficiency in fish supply.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ending Nigeria’s overreliance on imported fish and scaling up domestic aquaculture through supportive policies, technical assistance, and financial inclusion.

Oyetola also said the Ministry would expand support for youth and women in fish farming, providing startup grants and empowering them to take part in the blue economy’s growth.

He emphasized that increasing local production is not just about food security, but also job creation, export potential, and reducing pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
