Nigeria’s rail modernisation ambitions received a major boost after a 15-day intensive rail transit technology seminar concluded, involving top stakeholders from the Federal University of Transportation, Daura (FUTD), the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other transport agencies, in partnership with China Railway Signal and Communication International (CRSC International).

The training held to equip Nigerian engineers, technical staff and rail-sector professionals with hands-on knowledge of cutting-edge railway signalling, intelligent control systems, and transit-system management, with emphasis on practical application and problem-solving.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, CRSC’s Deputy General Manager, Yin Yungong, said the programme was designed to deepen understanding of China’s rail-transit technology and pledged full technical support moving forward. He disclosed plans to establish a joint “Intelligent Control Research Centre” in Nigeria by 2026 an initiative that aims to institutionalise knowledge transfer and enhance local capacity in rail-system management.

Prof Umar Adam Katsayal, Vice-Chancellor of FUTD, described the seminar as “comprehensive and transformative,” noting that participants benefitted from lectures, hands-on training, and site visits to rail-technology hubs in China, exposing them to best practices in signalling, low-altitude control systems, and metro/urban rail operations.
