The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has issued a strong condemnation following an act of vandalism on the critical Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge rail line.

The sabotage, which targeted essential signalling equipment, was discovered on Monday, October 6, 2025, during a routine inspection of the track between Agege and Agbado stations.

In an official statement, NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed that unidentified individuals removed signal machine cap protectors and severed connection cables on a key Switch Point Machine. This equipment is vital for the safe coordination and movement of trains.

The Corporation denounced the act as a serious threat to national infrastructure, emphasizing the grave safety risks it poses to passengers and staff. “Such actions not only disrupt smooth train operations but also endanger lives,” the statement read.

Despite the damage, Unyimadu assured the public that train services on the corridor have continued to operate without interruption. Security agencies have been notified and are conducting an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.

Reiterating its commitment to safe and reliable service, the NRC has called on the public, particularly communities adjacent to the rail line, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near railway property to the authorities.
