Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) have threatened to embark on strike over unresolved welfare and administrative issues, even as an aviation expert has highlighted persistent challenges facing the industry.
At the 40th anniversary conference of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) in Uyo, Capt. Ibrahim Yunusa listed poor funding, inadequate manpower development, and limited global certification opportunities for engineers and pilots as key obstacles to Nigeria’s aviation growth. He also noted that weather monitoring and infrastructure maintenance continue to fall short of international standards, posing risks to safety.
Meanwhile, three unions in NiMeT – the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), have issued a joint petition to management.
In a letter dated September 15 and titled “Urgent Intervention on NiMeT Lingering Issues,” the unions accused management of failing to implement circulars and address outstanding welfare concerns. They warned that unless the issues are resolved within two weeks, they will activate a suspended strike action.
The twin concerns of labour unrest and operational inefficiencies underscore the growing pressure on Nigeria’s aviation sector, which stakeholders say requires urgent reforms to remain competitive and safe.
