Vice President Kashim Shettima has set a national target of cutting road traffic fatalities in Nigeria by 50 percent by 2030, urging stronger domestic and international collaboration to achieve the goal.

Speaking at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) 8th Annual Lecture Series in Abuja, Shettima described road crashes as a major public health and socio-economic challenge, stressing the need for urgent reforms to curb the rising toll. He commended the FRSC’s work in promoting safer highways and pledged government backing for measures that align with global road safety standards.

The Vice President also pointed to the FRSC Amendment Bill, which has passed its third reading in the House of Representatives and is awaiting Senate approval, as part of efforts to strengthen the legal framework for road safety management.

In his remarks, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said the lecture’s theme, “Road Safety Management and Emerging Transportation Trends: Global Partnership and Optimal Performance,” reflects the importance of adapting to global transport innovations while ensuring optimal road safety performance in Nigeria.

The event drew participation from policymakers, road safety experts, and international partners, who expressed support for Nigeria’s commitment to reducing fatalities and improving transportation safety.
