Transporters for Tinubu Flags Off Drivers’ Care Initiative for NURTW in FCT

The Transporters for Tinubu 2027 campaign on Tuesday convened a special outreach session for members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Jabi Park, as part of its week-long Drivers’ Care Initiative across the Federal Capital Territory.

The programme, which runs from 26 February to 6 March 2026, offers free eye tests, drug abuse sensitization, and access to soft loans through the Transporters Cooperative Society. Last Thursday’s flag-off at the same venue catered specifically to members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).

Declaring Tuesday’s event open, the Mandate Secretary for Transportation, FCT, Dr. Elechi Chinedum, described transporters as the backbone of the nation’s economy.

“Transportation is the most important part of our lives. Without it, how will people move? How will goods get from Abia to Abuja?” Dr. Chinedum asked the gathering of union members.

A former Commissioner for Transport in Abia State, Dr. Chinedum assured transporters of the government’s commitment to their welfare. “Our office is open. Bring your problems. What we cannot solve, we take to the minister. What he cannot solve, we take higher. Up National!” he said.

He outlined ongoing infrastructure projects under the current administration, including modern bus terminals in Mabushi, Kobo, and the Central Area, and urged drivers to take advantage of the free health services.

Prince Segun Obayendo, National Coordinator of Transporters for Tinubu 2027, shared his personal journey as a former cab driver to connect with his audience. “I was beaten by police, by VIO, by road safety. I know what you go through. I am one of you,” he told the crowd.

He called for the transformation of motor parks across the country. “Why can’t our parks look like airports? We move millions of Nigerians every day. This country stops without us,” Obayendo said.

FCT NURTW Chairman, Prince Dauda Abdulakadir, thanked the organizers for bringing the initiative to the grassroots. “The more we contribute, the more we benefit. 2027 is close. Let us do what will help our future,” he said, acknowledging government support including the provision of CNG buses.

The initiative continues across FCT parks until 6 March, with organizers pledging similar outreaches nationwide.
