The United Nations, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and outdoor advertising company JCDecaux, has launched a nationwide road safety campaign tagged “Make A Safety Statement.”

The campaign, unveiled at the Black Diamond Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, aims to promote responsible driving habits and reduce the alarming rate of road traffic accidents across the country.

Speaking at the event, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, emphasised that road safety must be seen as everyone’s responsibility. He urged Nigerians to adopt safe road practices such as wearing seatbelts, using helmets, obeying traffic rules, and avoiding distractions while driving.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the UN for its continued support in road safety advocacy, noting that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030). He reiterated the Corps’ target to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50 percent before 2030 through strategic interventions and public enlightenment.

JCDecaux Nigeria, represented at the event, announced that the campaign’s messages will be displayed across major cities in the country through billboards, digital screens, and other public platforms to raise awareness among motorists and pedestrians.

The “Make A Safety Statement” initiative forms part of a global effort to promote safe mobility, encourage behavioural change, and protect lives on the road.

Officials from the transport sector, safety advocates, and civil society groups attended the launch, pledging to support the campaign’s objectives of creating a safer and more responsible driving culture in Nigeria.
