Transport operators in Lagos and Abuja have announced higher transport fares following recent adjustments in petrol prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The increase in transport fares comes after a surge in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) across several filling stations nationwide. Surveys across major cities showed that petrol prices recently crossed ₦1,000 per litre, forcing commercial transport operators to adjust their fares to cover rising operating costs.

As a result, many long-distance transport companies operating between Lagos and Abuja have revised ticket prices for passengers travelling on the route. Operators explained that the cost of fuel now makes it difficult to maintain previous fares without running at a loss.

Industry observers note that transportation is one of the sectors most sensitive to fuel price changes because petrol accounts for a large portion of operating expenses for buses and commercial vehicles. When pump prices rise, transport operators typically adjust fares to remain profitable.
