Lagos records 737,340 traffic violations in 2025, unveils plan for state driver’s licence

The Lagos State Government recorded 737,340 traffic violations in 2025 through its Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera network, a figure officials say underscores the growing role of digital surveillance in traffic enforcement and road safety management.

Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi disclosed the figure on Tuesday during the 2025 ministerial press briefing marking the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

According to the commissioner, the state processed 56,877 driver’s licences in the review period, comprising 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals, in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps. A further 1,158 International Driver’s Permits were issued.

Osiyemi announced that the state would launch a Lagos State driver’s licence within weeks, introducing an additional licensing option for motorists. The new licence, developed in partnership with federal authorities, will operate alongside the existing federal driver’s licence.

“Motorists will have the option of obtaining either the federal licence or the Lagos-issued licence,” Osiyemi said, describing the initiative as a move to improve processing efficiency, reduce delays, and strengthen road safety compliance. He added that the state-owned licence would support broader transport reforms, particularly in digital enforcement and vehicle monitoring.

The commissioner also reported increased compliance with vehicle safety regulations, driven by the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service’s enforcement of the “No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate” policy. He said 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates were issued during the period under review, reflecting greater adherence to inspection requirements through technology-driven operations.
