The Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Olugbenga Dairo, has announced that the newly certified Gateway International Airport (GIA) will significantly enhance the state’s transportation infrastructure, describing it as a transformative development for the region.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) recently granted commercial flight certification to the airport, marking a major achievement for the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun. Engr. Dairo attributed this milestone to the governor’s sustained focus on socio-economic development and industrial growth.
He detailed the advanced facilities now in place, including the longest runway in Nigeria, independent backup power systems for uninterrupted operations, a modern terminal building, a Doppler VOR navigation system for enhanced accuracy, and dedicated cargo warehousing, all meeting stringent domestic and international standards.
The commissioner emphasised the rigorous certification process undertaken by the NCAA, which has introduced elevated requirements for all airports nationwide. He noted that GIA is the first aerodrome in Nigeria to receive this updated class of operating permit.
Preparations are now underway to commence full passenger and cargo operations. In the longer term, the airport forms a key part of Ogun State’s 25-year integrated transport plan, designed to improve mobility and service delivery for all residents.
The Gateway International Airport is expected to provide a modern, efficient travel experience while supporting the state’s broader economic and logistical objectives.
