The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reported a revenue increase to N1.95 billion in the first quarter of 2025, driven by a surge in passenger traffic across its rail corridors.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the figure represents a steady rise in the number of passengers using train services, which reached 929,553 during the period under review.

The report attributed the growth to increased public confidence in rail transport, especially along key routes such as Lagos–Ibadan, Abuja–Kaduna, and Warri–Itakpe. The expansion of train services and efforts to enhance operational efficiency have also contributed to the boost in revenue.

While passenger earnings accounted for the bulk of NRC’s income, the report indicated that freight services continued to face operational challenges, particularly on routes undergoing maintenance and security upgrades.

Industry experts noted that the positive trend highlights the growing potential of rail transportation as a cost-effective and reliable alternative for commuters and cargo movement in Nigeria.

The NRC has, in recent months, intensified its modernization drive, including plans to introduce more locomotives and improve passenger facilities, as part of the Federal Government’s broader infrastructure development agenda.
