Nigeria celebrates a century of civil aviation through the launch of a landmark publication titled “100 Years of Civil Aviation in Nigeria: History, Issues and Prospects”.

The book, authored by Wole Shadare, chronicles the evolution of Nigeria’s aviation sector from its beginnings in 1925 through to 2025, examining its history, key milestones and future opportunities.

During the launch in Lagos, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced that the federal government will no longer fund a national carrier, but will instead support the growth and expansion of domestic airlines.

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, noted that the aviation sector now contributes about US$1.7 billion to Nigeria’s GDP, attributing this growth to increased private-sector participation.

As Nigeria reflects on its century of flight, the industry faces both opportunities and challenges, including infrastructure needs, regulatory reform, and enhancing competitiveness within Africa’s aviation landscape.
