The Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, has reiterated the agency’s commitment to aviation safety, calling on all stakeholders in Nigeria’s airport ecosystem to deepen collaboration, enhance communication and proactively manage conflicts that undermine safe operations.

Speaking at the launch of FAAN’s 2025 Safety Week in Lagos, Kuku emphasised that safety is not solely dependent on technology or infrastructure, but hinges significantly on human factors such as clear communication, collaboration among agencies and prompt conflict resolution.

“Safety is our core in the aviation environment,” Kuku said. “We do not wait for conflicts to arise before acting; we adopt preventive measures and strictly follow standard operating procedures in all we do.”

The Safety Week theme “Navigating Conflict for a Safer Aviation Industry in Nigeria” underscores the authority’s focus on behavioural and organisational dimensions of safety. According to Kuku, recent incidents at terminals highlighted gaps in communication and chain-of-command protocols among airport staff, security agencies and other aviation stakeholders.

Kuku also drew attention to environmental and community safety around airports, noting encroachment, improper waste disposal and irregular tanker parking as risks that can trigger wildlife hazards, bird strikes and other safety threats particularly at busy airports like Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
