Nigeria’s Aviation Minister Announces Clemency in High-Profile Airport Cases Following Remorse

In an official press statement released today, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, announced the withdrawal of criminal complaints and reduced sanctions for individuals involved in recent high-profile airport misconduct incidents, citing compassionate grounds and demonstrated remorse.

Keyamo stated that after consultations with aviation stakeholders and reviewing appeals, criminal charges against Ibom Air passenger Comfort Emmanson have been formally withdrawn. Emmanson, detained at Kirikiri Prison since her arrest on August 10 for unruly conduct, showed “great remorse” during police questioning. Authorities will facilitate her release this week, and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has agreed to lift her lifetime flight ban.

Regarding musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM 1), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will reduce his flight ban to one month and withdraw criminal complaints. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will engage him as an airport security ambassador. ValueJet pilots Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba will have licenses restored after a one-month suspension and mandatory retraining.

Concurrently, Keyamo ordered aviation agencies to conduct a retreat next week,  open to press coverage, to retrain security personnel on de-escalation techniques and handling disruptive passengers. Airlines will also review staff conduct protocols.

“These decisions were taken purely on compassionate grounds,” Keyamo emphasized, adding that government “will never pander to base sentiments” but sought closure after lessons were learned. He stressed this draws a line while reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to aviation security.

The resolution addresses weeks of public debate over passenger rights and airline staff conduct during recent airport altercations.
