Drivers operating on ride-hailing platforms, including Uber and Bolt, sets to begin a three-day strike in Lagos to protest poor earnings, high operational costs, and what they describe as unfavourable policies by ride-hailing companies.

The strike action was announced by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), which said the protest is aimed at drawing attention to the economic challenges faced by drivers in the app-based transport sector.

According to the union, the rising cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and inflation has significantly reduced drivers’ profits, while ride fares on the platforms have remained largely unchanged. The drivers also complained about high commission rates deducted by the companies, which further reduce their take-home earnings.

The union also outlined several demands, including a review of ride fares to reflect current economic realities, a reduction in commission charges by the companies, improved security measures for drivers, and better policies regarding driver account deactivation.
