President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s maritime sector and expanding opportunities in the blue economy. The President made this known on Thursday when he received the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Domínguez, at the State House, Lagos.
During the meeting, President Tinubu highlighted the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms aimed at positioning the maritime industry as a key driver of national development. He noted that the recent signing of the National Maritime Policy underscores his administration’s resolve to promote safety, sustainability, and global best practices within the sector.
“The maritime industry remains a cornerstone of our economic diversification strategy. We are committed to making it a viable alternative revenue source that aligns with international standards,” Tinubu said.
In his remarks, the IMO Secretary-General commended Nigeria for its leadership role in maritime safety and security, particularly in addressing piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. He pledged the IMO’s continued support for Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its maritime administration and infrastructure.
Domínguez also lauded the Federal Government’s initiatives under the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, describing Nigeria’s progress as a model for other African nations.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, alongside top officials from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
