Lagos State Government has concluded plans to launch the Omi Eko Water Transport Project on October 17, 2025, at the Five Cowries Terminal in Ikoyi.
The project, spearheaded by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), aims to revolutionize water transportation through the introduction of electric ferries, smart ticketing systems, and upgraded modern terminals across the state.
Funded through a partnership between the Lagos State Government, the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union (EU), and the European Investment Bank (EIB), the project is valued at about €410 million.
According to LASWA, Omi Eko will feature over 78 high-capacity ferries, terminal upgrades, and integrated digital systems to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport.
The initiative is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, enhance intermodal connectivity, and promote sustainable mobility in Africa’s most populous city.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to lead the official commissioning of the project, which marks another milestone in Lagos’ vision to develop a smart and resilient transport network.
