The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to integrate the National Identification Number (NIN) into pilots’ licensing and medical certification processes, in a move aimed at strengthening safety regulation and improving data management within the aviation industry.

The regulator said the linkage would create a single, reliable identity framework for pilots, making it easier to verify credentials, monitor medical fitness and prevent identity-related irregularities in the system. According to the NCAA, the initiative will also enhance collaboration with relevant government agencies while ensuring that only duly certified and medically fit pilots operate in Nigerian airspace.

Officials noted that the policy aligns with international best practices in aviation safety oversight, where robust identity management is critical to maintaining high operational standards. The integration is also expected to simplify regulatory processes, reduce paperwork and improve the efficiency of license renewals and medical recertification.

The NCAA assured pilots and operators that data protection and privacy considerations would be strictly observed during implementation. Further guidelines and timelines for the rollout of the NIN-linked system are expected to be communicated to stakeholders as the authority moves toward full adoption.
