The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, has issued a safety advisory urging motorists to exercise heightened caution on pothole-ridden highways as the rainy season sets in, citing increased risks of skidding and reduced vehicle control.

Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi delivered the warning yesterday while addressing journalists in Ota. He emphasised that wet and slippery road surfaces demand adjusted driving behaviour to prevent avoidable crashes.

“The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains,” Ogunjobi said. He advised drivers to maintain double or triple the usual following distance to allow sufficient braking time.

The commander also stressed the importance of proactive vehicle maintenance. He urged motorists to inspect tyre tread depth, replace worn wiper blades promptly, and verify that headlamps, brake lights, indicators, and braking systems are fully functional, particularly for driving in heavy downpours.

Ogunjobi further cautioned against navigating flood-prone routes or attempting to drive through running water. He recommended that drivers pull over safely and wait for conditions to improve whenever visibility deteriorates significantly.

The advisory follows forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which in April predicted variable rainfall patterns for the year with Ogun State expected to experience a prolonged rainy season. Additionally, recent alerts from the Federal Ministry of Environment identified Ogun among states at elevated risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding during the period.

“Motorists should exercise extreme caution and prioritise proactive vehicle maintenance to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” Ogunjobi said.
